Group Travel

Don't wait until you arrive at your destination for the fun to begin! The Piedmont and Carolinian provide a fun and easy way to go on school field trips or group outings. Move around freely and avoid traffic delays as you sit back, relax and enjoy the trip.

Passengers traveling together in groups of 20 or more will receive a discount off the normal rail fare or a free escort ticket for each 20 travelers. These discount options are offered at the discretion of Amtrak. Learn more about group travel requests on Amtrak's website or call 1-800-USA-1GRP for more information on taking everyone along to share the fun.

Amtrak also offers a 10 percent discount on most Amtrak rail fares to attendees of many conventions. Convention sponsors should contact the Amtrak Group Desk at 1-800-USA-1GRP to request this special discount for their event. The Group Desk will provide full details of the terms and conditions for this discount.

Groups of Less Than 20

  • Call 1-800 USA RAIL. (Request special seating when you make your reservation.)
  • Make group travel arrangements and reservations at least 30 days in advance.
  • Be prepared to give the date, destination and, if a school group, the number of students, adult chaperones and teachers traveling. Have alternate dates available in case the train is booked on your first preference. Be sure to record your reservation number for future reference.
  • Services and facilities for persons with disabilities are available. Please notify your reservation agent if you need special assistance.
  • Please note: Groups should be at the boarding station at least 40 minutes before the scheduled train departure time. Check in immediately with the ticket agent upon arrival the station. When boarding the train, your conductor will provide instructions and seating for your group.

Helpful Hints for Planning Your Group Trip

  • Make reservations early to receive lower fares and increase the chances of your group being able to sit together.
  • Choose several possible dates when making reservations and cost compare between days. (Better fares may be available on lighter travel days.)
  • Travel earlier in the week. The trains are usually more crowded on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so seats might be limited.
  • Travel in smaller groups to increase your chances for better fares and seating groups together. We suggest 60 or less on the Piedmont (Trains 73, 74, 75, 76) and 70 or less on the Carolinian (Trains 79, 80).
  • Ask for the best available rates. Amtrak Group rates entitle one person to travel free for every 20 people.

Bring only what you can carry. Backpacks, jackets, supplies, etc. cannot be left on board the train or at the station. Limited space and security restrictions make it imperative that groups keep up with all of their belongings. Be sure to tell members of the group that they will need to carry what they bring with them.
